Normally, students are not excluded on the basis of these examinations but will be recommended for appropriate leveling work as needed. Continuation in the music program is subject to faculty review and approval. The students will receive notification of the date of their audition and the placement examinations will be in the following areas:
PIANO PROFICIENCY
All students seeking to enter the M.C.M. program are required to take a piano proficiency test during registration week to determine what level of study they should begin. Those who are unable to demonstrate certain skills will be required to enroll in MP 391 until they pass proficiency and are approved to advance to MP 393. The following skills are required:
- Sight read a hymn.
- Demonstrate an intermediate level of proficiency.
- Play the major and minor keys and scales plus demonstrate basic chords in those keys.
Students may not withdraw once their initial enrollment has been processed. Those who are prepared in all areas may pass the proficiency needed at the time of the audition. When a student passes the piano proficiency exam, he/she will receive credit for the course MP 391 and pay the course fee (but not the applied lesson fees).

The student will be prepared to sing from memory two standard secular or sacred art songs which show the highest level of vocal attainment. In the event the audition is unacceptable, the recital will be delayed. Please see the Music Department Coordinator for complete information about voice or conducting recitals.
